Martin Atkins
Martin is 41 years old and lives in Leeds with wife Sue and their daughters Stacey and Chloe. His occupation is a Master Technician in the motor trade. Martin throws a 23 gram dart and has played county for 10 years. He has been in the ‘A’ team for 9 years. He started playing darts at the age of 17 for Meanwood club in Leeds, at 23 he was introduced to different leagues by mate Steve Worsnop. At the age of 24 he then got Dartitus with which he suffered for a year, but managed to overcome by playing darts in the dark. Martin currently plays 7 nights a week in local league, super league and practice. He also does the competition circuit both home and abroad chasing World championship points for which he has qualified for the last 2 years. Martin has the nickname ‘The Assassin’ which started when Richard Winpenny referred to him as ‘The Yorkshire Assassin’ at the World Masters. Since then the shortened version has stuck with Martin.
Martin’s high points in darts has been beating ‘Barney’ 3 times on world stage also playing for England and winning the Finland Open. His low points in darts came from Aug to Dec 2006 when he experienced first round exits in 4 ranked opens. He is also disappointed in not being selected for the home international in 2007.
When I asked him for personnel comments relating to darts he said ‘I play the game because I love it and am fortunate to be good enough to play at top level. I also love the people involved in darts’
My comments on Martin are; I have been fortunate to partner Martin in many pairs competitions and can say that never once did he put me under any pressure and has always believed in my ability even when I didn’t, which is all part of his mild mannered temperament which makes him the likable person that he is.
