Who better for my first profile than John Dean who is probably one of the proudest men to ever wear a Yorkshire shirt and is currently an ‘A’ team player. John, a 41 year old refuse collector who comes from Leeds is married to Bev and has 3 children. He started playing darts at the age of 11 with his uncle, he did however have a 12 year break until he met a guy called Pat Mauldoon who inspired him to play again and also gave him his nickname which is Jonty. John doesn’t do the competition circuit other than the Yorkshire Classic, at which he reached the final in 2004, his reason being that he doesn’t like the hanging around waiting to play each round and also it would keep him away from his family too much. He does however sometimes participate in the local comps. When I asked John what was his high point in darts, he immediately answered ‘being asked to join the Yorkshire squad 5 years ago’ and he said his lowest point was ‘losing 3-0 in the 2006 Lancashire match’. John throws a 23grm dart and practices 2 hours every night. He said ‘darts is a passion to me and my only ambition is to continue to play in the ‘A’ team, when that passion dies then I will stop playing’. Well I hope you have enjoyed being introduced to Jonty, for my part I will say; you couldn’t wish to meet a nicer bloke than John but also watch out for his 10 year old son Steffen who is already a force to be reckoned with on the dartboard and I will tip as a future Yorkshire player in 8-10 years time
