Hello,
thanks for visiting SilverMine. Over the last 6 years we've received 1000's
(10,000's?) of queries concerning your silver. SilverMine was set up as
an online resource for collectors of mainly antique British Sterling Silver.
This tends to have the distinct advantage of being marked with a lion
"passant" (walking to the left with it's head turned over it's
shoulder), a town mark (most commonly a leopard's head (London), anchor
(Birmingham) or crown (Sheffield)), a date letter and a makers mark.

If your piece has the Lion Passant or the number 925 then it is, in all probability, Sterling Silver. If it has the numbers '900' '850' '800' or similar then this would be the silver content (per thousand) of the silver alloy used. Much European silver is made from this grade of alloy. If it has the letters "EPNS" "EP" "EPBM" "EPC" "SP"or "A1", 'Made in England' or 'England' then it is silverplate or electroplate. This is in itself a fascinating area of collection and study but is not covered here apart from a brief history here. We suggest you buy a book from our Bookshop. We've selected some titles below that may help or you can use the amazon.com and amazon.co.uk search boxes at the bottom of the page. |
