Hungary

1500  Until 1500 hallmarking was not customary in Hungary. Some objects from the 14th and 15th centuries bear hallmarks but neither their significance nor the system of hallmarking, has as yet been clarified.
1504  The oldest regulation on hallmarking in Hungary was issued by Vladislav, the King of Bohemia, Poland and Hungary. The mark is called "signum communae czechae". it was stamped next to the maker's mark. From the name of the mark it is evident that the purity control was carried out by the guild. This system was valid on the territory of Hungary (and Slovakia, which until 1918 was part of Hungary) until 1866.
1866  A new system of hallmarking was introduced on 1 August, valid for the whole territory of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire (see Austria). These marks were in force on Hungarian territory until 1937.
