1314  King Haakon V of Norway issued a decree requiring silver to be stamped with a standard mark. 
1380 - 1814  The union of Norway and Denmark - Danish regulations were in force. 
1568  A goldsmiths' guild was founded in Bergen. 
1640-1740  Guilds were abolished and goldsmiths were directly subordinated to the king. 
1740-1840  The guilds were allowed again but their powers were very much curtailed. 
1740  Henceforth hallmarks appeared for the individual months, first in the form of a fraction. 
1766 - 1820  Hallmarks for the individual months depicted the signs of the zodiac. 
1859  The guilds were once more abolished. 
1891  The law of 6 June introduced a modern system of hallmarking. The hallmark must have the purity in thousandths, the letter "S'' next to the mark of purity, and the name of the maker. The lowest permitted purity is 830/1000.
