1485  A letter to the imperial council mentioned stamping items with the maker's mark. 
1529  In the goldsmiths order of Gustav Vasa the maker's mark was mentioned. 
16thC  During this century the maker's mark appeared alongside the town mark. 
1689  The imperial assayer A. Grill, in Stockholm, introduced date letters. 
1752  The state took over the control of the purity of objects made of precious metals. 
1758  The chamber assembly introduced the use of date letters throughout the country (including Finland) 
1860  Instead of marks with the town emblem, special letters were introduced for the different places with assay office , corresponding with the first letter of the name of the town.
