1544 The administration of Zurich attempted to impose Zurich regulations stipulating the purity of precious metals on the other towns and cantons 
1547 The proposal of Zurich was adopted in Lucerne and perhaps also in Uri, Basel and Solothurn.
1848 The federal government issued a decree on the uniform standard of fineness throughout the territory of Switzerland. The individual cantons, however, continued to use their own marks. 
1880 A federal law on the control and guarantee of the purity of silver. Permitted standards were: 936, 926, 900. 875, and 800/1000. 
1882 Uniform marks came into force throughout Switzerland, according to the law of 1880.
1893 Altered marks became valid and were used until 1934. The letter in the shield indicated the seat of the control office.
