Town Marks

Since the 1973 Hallmarking Act there are four remaining Assay Offices in the United Kingdom; London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh.  Prior to this date there have been many other provincial Assay Offices empowered by Goldsmiths Hall in London to regulate the fineness and quality of gold and silver articles, each having their own distinctive town (or "hall") mark.
