Whilst researching this surname we have found it spelt a variety of ways:
WASSELL/WASSALL/WASELL/WASALL/WASSEL/WASSAL/WAFSELL/WALSALL/WASSALE/WOSSELL/WASTELL etc.
We have also found some very interesting individuals from all walks of life:
a Benedictine Priest,
an Organist at Birmingham Cathedral,
a few Professional Footballers,
plus two very brave men who were awarded medals for their Gallantry.
The first hero was Samuel
Wassall, born in 1856
in Birmingham, England,
who was awarded the Victoria Cross for
saving a comrades life under fire of the Zulu's
at the battle of
Isandlewana in 1879.
He settled in Barrow in Furness, England
after the Zulu war,
where a memorial stone was erected in his
honour 58 years after he died.
Another hero was Dr Corydon Wassell.
He was
born on the 4th July 1884 in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA,
and
during the Second World War he was awarded the United States Navy
Medal for Gallantry.
He looked after some very sick patients who
were stranded on the island of Java after their ship was sunk,
and was instrumental in helping them escape and stayed with them
throughout their ordeal.
A film about Corydon Wassell called the Story of Dr Wassell
was made in
1944 by Cecil B DeMille,
Gary Cooper played the starring role.
The film was based on a book of
the same name written by James Hilton.
I have been able to trace his line back to the Midlands in England.
