History
As its name suggests the Sussex originated in the county of Sussex. It is one of the oldest breeds in Britain and originally provided both meat and eggs. The original colours were brown, red and speckled. The Sussex is a very popular breed in the UK being a very good egg producer laying around 260 large eggs per hen per year.

Behaviour
The Sussex is docile and adaptable to most surroundings. They are quite happy to be either free range or kept in runs and their placid temperament makes them good garden birds.

Varieties
Sussex chickens can be brown, buff, light red, speckled, silver or white. The darker varieties have red eyes and the lighter varieties orange eyes. The Sussex has a medium sized single comb, red earlobes and white legs and skin. The brown and red varieties are rare now but the others are quite common.
