Welcome to our Web site
We would like to hear from former pupils or members of staff of the Abbey School, in Ashurst Wood, near East Grinstead, in Sussex, United Kingdom. We do hope that, in time, this page will be a place full of interesting experiences and a record of what the Abbey School has done for its pupils and its Staff.
In its more recent history, Clare House Preparatory School was run by the Abbey and Clare House Company. This company was based in East Grinstead, Sussex, in the United Kingdom from where it also ran the Abbey School. Originally in Park Road, Beckenham, the Abbey School moved to Ashurst Wood, near East Grinstead shortly after the start of the Second World War. The fate of the two schools was finally determined by the winding-up of the Abbey and Clare House Company in 1969.
If you have any information about the Abbey School that you would like to see added to this site, please contact our Webmaster with the details.
Memories of the Abbey School - 1943 to 1949
Mike Miller (Abbey School 1943 - 1949) has kindly written about his memories of the Abbey School. We hope his account will trigger some memories for former pupils and staff.

Abbey Magazines
The Webmaster for the Abbey School site has been entrusted with looking after a number of the School magazines. These were published termly until Summer 1940, when the constraints of the Second World War forced the School to publish the magazine annually. The original intention was to revert to termly publication after the War, but this did not happen.
There has been considerable interest shown in the magazines by several people for a wide variety of reasons, so the Webmaster has digitised them and they are now available as scanned images on a CD.
Currently we are missing the following issues:
all up to and including No. 38 [Michaelmas Term 1935];
Nos. 43, 44; 47; 49; 54, 55, 56, 57, 58; 73;
No. 79 [1967 issue] onwards - as the Abbey School closed around 1970, issue No. 82 was possibly the last one to have been published.
Please contact our Webmaster if you would like a CD (a small donation is requested) or if you are able to make any of the missing issues available so that they can digitised and included on the CD. All magazines will be returned to you (unless you wish to make a gift of them to the Abbey School Web Team). Thank you.
Former pupils of the Abbey School are invited to the annual meeting of the Clare House Association on the first Saturday in October at the Charing Cross Hotel in London when the original magazines would be available for perusal.
