ARMSTRONG HOUSE
THE ABBEYFIELD BAMBURGH SOCIETY
A member of the National Abbeyfield Society
Whose Royal Patron is HRH The Prince of Wales
Write a poem about Abbeyfield they plead.
But who can describe the life that we lead,
So full of loving care and fun
A time of luxury when life’s work is done.
No worries now, no bills, no chores,
No anxious hours of culinary bores,
Or “What shall we have for lunch today?”
Good meals produced for us come what may!
A committee who give their time for nought
Except for the pleasure to the elderly brought
Of a pleasant word or a kindly thought,
A bunch of flowers on a visit brought
To a lonely soul whose life is restricted
By aches and pains that age has inflicted.
How we enjoy our mealtime gatherings!
The news of the day and the gossip jabberings!
Although we are old we do not forget
To consider our friends at the table set
“Would you like some more greens?” “Can I
Pass you the gravy?”
We talk of the past, of the war, of the navy,
We each have a story of life to recall,
Of youth, family, work and so we all
Matter a lot in this pleasant place.
When you’re not around someone looks for your face.
We love our life here and we’re very content.
We have kindness and comfort, our time is well spent.
We can read, watch TV or go for a walk
In our lovely garden, we can always talk
To our fellow residents - we’re all good friends,
We laugh and we joke - the day soon ends.
We thank everyone who makes life for us good
Our Abbeyfield’s happy - if only we could
Create homes like ours for all folk getting old,
To give peace and happiness as years unfold.
An ode to abbeyfield
This poem was penned by the residents at Pilcher’s Field in Devon, a house that is part of the Buckland Monachorum Society named in honour of its benefactor, Mrs Pilcher. “We are a very happy community, well fed by an excellent housekeeper and well looked after by a very caring voluntary committee. Everything here is perfect and we are very lucky indeed”. These words are shared by the residents of Abbeyfiel Bamburgh Society and illustrate the ethos of Abbeyfield UK.
