EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Jan 2005 - Present

Director & Principle Aquatic Ecologist, APEM Ltd., Manchester, UK

May 2003 - Dec 2004

Principle Aquatic Ecologist, APEM Ltd., Manchester, UK

Involved in all aspects of the business from areas of project management and research to business development, marketing and personnel management. Highly involved in report and tender writing as well as hands on field and laboratory work.

Apr 2002 - May 2003

Senior Aquatic Ecologist, APEM Ltd., Manchester, UK

The main role of this post was to manage projects and staff, co-ordinate field teams and provide expert opinion on various aspects of aquatic ecology.

Sept 2000 - Nov 2001

Post Doctoral Research Fellowship, University of Waterloo, Canada

The main objective of this research was to investigate the ecology of invasive water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in Lake Victoria and understand ways to control the plant and manage the Lake. Having set up a monitoring programme to help understand and predict the possible resurgence of this weed I then developed an innovative and quick method of measuring the potential for growth through instantaneous measurements of photosynthesis as well as relating growth with changing nutrient conditions. This work has taken me between Lake Victoria in Uganda and experimental greenhouses at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Nov 1999 - May 2000

Lecturer in Aquatic Ecology and Zoology, University of Liverpool, UK

The focus of this job was to prepare and deliver lectures and practicals for several courses based around aquatic ecology and zoology. This involved liasing with numerous other members of staff and technicians involved on the courses to construct a coherent and logical program of lectures. Other tasks included the setting and marking of exam papers as well as dealing with individual students on a personal tutor basis.

Oct 1994 - Oct 1995

Special Projects Manager at Cotswold Camping, London, UK

Responsible for the organisation and promotion of special events and projects held at the London branch, staff training, procurement of specialist equipment for special orders and giving public lectures on equipment usage and climbing expeditions.

Mar 1993 - Aug 1993

Scientific Research Assistant for Dr B. Thake, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, UK

Worked in the Adriatic Sea and London on nuisance forming algae involving the design and implementation of experiments, field sampling and analysis of data.

LEISURE INTERESTS

My main leisure interests are mountaineering and rock climbing and I have participated in several international expeditions that have led to various first ascents and new routes as well as several articles being published in relevant journals e.g. Canadian Alpine Journal and magazines e.g. High.

I have held various positions of responsibility relating to this pastime:

President of the Mountaineering Club at Queen Mary and Westfield College, 1990 - 1991

Treasurer of the 1993 Anglo-Soviet climbing expedition to the Asan Pamirs (Russia)

Member of the 1991 Anglo-Canadian mountaineering expedition to the Coast Range Mountains (Canada)

Other interests include SCUBA diving and photography and I have had several photographs published; most notably the front cover of a North Face Climbing Equipment Catalogue.

In addition I have a passion for music and combine a classical guitar education with computer technology to create a sound that, so far, seems limited in appeal to all except very close friends, although I believe that they only humour me.
