Project Description

Time Drops, is an installation of electroacoustic sound and light. The composer Akemi Ishijima collaborates with the British lighting designer Jude James.

The intention of the collaborators is to deal with the subject of dividing and redefining space through the use of sound and light as physical entities.
The concept of intensity in stillness which the installation reflects, will be aided by the inclusion of minimal objects which will physically focus the effect on the space of its sonic and lighting environment.

The exhibition space is divided into three areas which respectively represents infinity, encapsulated moment of creation, and cosmic equilibrium. Visitors can walk through the different areas, or stay in one place for contemplation.

Despite its conceptual nature, Time Drops is experienced through perception, by the senses, and not through intellect.
It aims to widen the perception of art of sound by creating a special space, a garden of peace.
Its expression through sound and light has a non-aggressive, universal nature. The work can be accessible and appreciated by a wide range of public since it does not rely on any specific cultural, or social references.

The sounds are sparsely placed in time and space. Lighting reorders our perception of the space.
Like rain drops making rings in water, the sound generates rings of oscillation in accord with the light. The perpetual process of generation and degeneration creates parallel universes and coexisting ones, which paradoxically result in harmony of the very beginning. Silence. Timelessness.

A universe is born when an impulse returns to the source.
Time Drops creates a poetic correspondence with the cosmic harmony.
