OUR AIM

To promote sustainable economics within the West Midlands.

The Group first met in 1994 to apply the ideas of the New Economics Foundation to the economy of Birmingham and the West Midlands. Since then we have developed our own unique response to the practical economic problems of the City and the Region through dialogue with many other organisations and bodies of opinion.

WHAT IS NEW ECONOMICS?

We take it to mean economic activity that is designed to last and to meet people’s basic needs.

New Economics opposes the short-term exploitation of people, natural resources and the environment that has typified industrialised societies. E F Schumacher, in his book "Small is Beautiful" describes it as "a study of economics as if people mattered".

WHAT WE DO

We engage with the economic problems of the day by;

Meeting monthly to learn about the issues and form our response to them

Promoting our views by publicity in the media and by publishing books and discussion papers.

Submitting our comments on government consultation papers

Working with other organisations to put forward sustainable solutions

Doing action research

Taking part in the world-wide debate about sustainability

Members can also borrow books from the Reading List and a meter for monitoring the electricity consumption of domestic appliances.
