Encouraged by splendid
weather, the community turned out in force to participate in the many
events in the 2001 Fair and support the Tweedbank Lad and Lass, Ross
Brotherston and Jasmyn Kelly.
Jennifer McAuley, secretary
of the Fair Committee, said: “This year’s Fair has been a runaway success.
“The event is getting
bigger and better each year and it is a great boost to the Fair Committee
to see the events well attended.
“The weather was dry and
all the outside events went ahead and the children and adults all appeared
to be having a great time and enjoyed socialising in Tweedbank.
“The Tweedbank principals
carried out their duties marvellously and we were extremely proud of
them.”
The Fair began on May 26
with lots of pavement artists around Gun Knowe Loch and, in the early
evening, Galashiels Ex-Service Pipe Band led the Fancy Dress Parade to the
Community Centre where they were greeted by a tremendous turnout.
The judging of entries was
carried out by the Melrosian’s party, Scottish Borders Council’s assistant
director of education, Graeme Donald, and Mrs McAuley, assisted by the
Tweedbank Lad and Lass.
The junior and senior
discos were well-attended on Monday, while Tuesday’s Investiture Evening
saw the exchange of colours between the principals of the Fair and the
Braw Lads’ Gathering followed by an open-air disco and barbecue.
Around 50 pre-school had a
racey time at the Mini Olympics on Wednesday and close to 30 joined the
committee for a senior party at Galashiels Swimming Pool.
Over 120 children, armed
with dabbers, were enthusiastic players in Thursday’s junior bingo.
On Friday, a keenly
contested five-a-side football competition was followed by the Tweedbank
PTFA Race Night, which raised £400.
St Ronan’s Silver Band led
Saturday’s Flower and Fruit Grand Parade, with the Tweedbank Lad and Lass
and attendants following in a Jaguar car.
The children’s gifts were
presented to residents of Craw Wood by Councillor David Parker, his wife,
Ruth, and the Tweedbank Lad and Lass.
The fun-packed Fair
continued with an afternoon fete and sports, including the Round the Pond
Race, and concluded at a family dance in the primary school.
