Why Group Therapy??
Why do we think structured, facilitated
group therapy can help ?
Many survivors feel isolated and
alone. They feel that they are the only one this has ever happened to and no-one
else will understand.
Although everyone's experience is
unique to them, there are many others who have experienced similar things and so
can relate to similar feelings.
A facilitated group is one led by a
trained therapist/counsellor with particular training and/or expertise in the
field of sexual abuse and therefore the group is closely monitored so becomes a
safe place to explore the issues surrounding the abuse with others who
understand. One to one counselling also has its place and many of our members
are receiving one to one help alongside attending the group.
The one does not
exclude the other and indeed the two work very well together.
What you share is your choice!!
No-one is asked questions or forced to speak at all. It is actually relatively
rare for members to share details of their abuse. Usually members share their
feelings and the negative effects it has left them with and how it is affecting
them today.
We deal with areas such as
self-esteem, learning to trust, dealing with anger and guilt, assertiveness,
relationships (general and family), moving on etc..
We cannot take away what has
happened!!
What we hope to achieve is that you
regain control of your life, your choices and your past rather than it being in
control of you.
