Bill Hogarth MBE : Coppice Merchant

Bill was the Association's first President.

This is the book about life in the woodlands of the southern Lake District that he was writing when he died in 1999 and has been edited for publication by CANW Secretary, Alan Shepley.

A proportion of the sales income is shared between the organisation founded in Bill’s memory (Bill Hogarth MBE Memorial Apprenticeship Trust) and the trust he helped to found (Wood Education Programme Trust) to help support their work

Report of the 21st Century Coppice Conference 2006
The Conference was held 11-13 May 2006 at Grange over Sands, Cumbria.

It was targeted at all who have involvement with coppice woodlands and their future and was the first major gathering of coppice and greenwood workers, researchers, conservationists, land managers, producers, and students since 2001. As such it deliberately crossed the divide between academic study and practical, everyday involvement with coppices with contributions from well-known research workers and woodland practitioners.

The three major themes were 'Coppice and Conservation', 'Management Approaches', and 'Pathways to the Future'. Though based in the southern Lake District contributors took a wider national and international perspective - the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Poland, other EU countries, and Scandinavia were all considered from personal knowledge. Much has changed in the last few years and this was a unique opportunity to network, to share information, and to exchange views between professional full-time workers and amateurs, academics and hands-on  practitioners, the long-experienced and beginners.
