'New Spring' - a pilot demonstration plot of simple hazel coppice

The New Spring is 0.4 ha approx (1 acre or thereabouts) located at Tod's Lot, Crook, Cumbria. The planting is on an area of severely disadvantaged former grazing land on the south-east facing slope of the ridge to the west of the upper Lyth Valley about 4 miles west of Kendal. It was planted by Coppice Association North West members in March 2004, within the same deer exclusion fence as a Commemorative Wood. The purpose is to provide a demonstration area, teaching and information for coppice apprentices, schools and groups, and the public at large.

The New Spring project is a partnership between the owners - Marian Kearney and Alan Shepley, the Bill Hogarth MBE Memorial Apprenticeship Trust, Coppice Association North West, and Wood Education Programme Trust. Oversight of the project will be by the owners and representatives of each of the partners.

Initially the owners have provided the land and the balance of funds: BHMAT has committed funds in memory of the late Jim Bingley and also work done by their apprentices: CANW made a substantial contribution to fencing costs, and provides guidance, and expertise: WEP will provide funding towards the necessary development of education and interpretation materials and will link these with other information and interpretation at Tod's Lot. A United Utilies 'New Trees Grant' of £500 - via Cumbria Woodlands - was used to purchase stock.
