AFP News Agency reports say that eleven of the fourteen RUF/AFRC
junta allied troops who allegedly surrendered themselves to Ecomog nearly
two weeks ago and had since been handed over to UN military observers in
Sierra Leone (UNOMSIL) have today been released by UNOMSIL and returned
to their own territory. The other three, being minors, were handed over
to UNICEF. "It is hoped the gesture will be the first in a series
of releases on both sides allowing the country to move towards a lasting
peace" said UNOMSIL in a statement released today.
