Update  for Wednesday, 30 June 1999 [10 am London Time]
  • Emissaries who left Lomé on Saturday 26 June for Kailahun, the rebel headquarters in Eastern Sierra Leone, armed with the terms of the latest peace offer, are expected to return to Togo today. They had been expected back yesterday. There has been no statement from them to say whether or not the RUF/AFRC have agreed to the deal. Despite this fact, speculation is rife that a signing ceremony will certainly take place this weekend, on Saturday, in the Togolese capital.
  • We have learnt that there is considerable and sustained pressure on Foday Sankoh to sign the deal whatever the result from the "bush". All indications are that he will.
  • A source from Freetown has also told Focus on Sierra Leone that Attorney General and chief government negotiator, Solomon Berewa, is to invite Sankoh to withdraw his appeal against his death sentence in order to make way for a "pardon". There has been no reported reaction as yet from Sankoh. (Continue to watch this space).
  • Our source from Freetown also told us that President Kabbah will be travelling to Bo, Kenema and Lungi to explain the terms of the agreement, on Thursday.
  • The Sierra Leone Government delegation led by Kabbah will travel to Lome on Friday for the signing of the agreement on Saturday, according to this same source.
