A House called Bartropps

(Downstairs)

Sandra Hawes writes that she is trying to compile a family history of her mother's family. Her Great Grandfather was the Head Gardener at Bartropps.   Sandra is trying to build a picture of what their life was like.

Albert William Lambert and his wife Ruth

The couple were allowed to live in Bartropp Lodge along with their family, even after their retirement until they both past away. She understands this was quite unusual in those times.

They celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary there, which was mentioned in the local paper at the time. (See Right)

The Pilditch family must have been a very generous and caring employer. Albert's eldest son was even given the opportunity to buy the lodge after his parents died, for the princely sum of £1000, but regrettably declined the offer.  Apparently he lived in a council house and did not believe in buying property.

Sandra goes on to say that she has been trying to find more pictures of both the lodge and the house without much success.

If anyone can help in her research, she can be contacted at aven@aven.wanadoo.co.uk
