The Bartrops Arrive in Sheffield

Legend in the family has it that my Great Great Grandfather, William Bartrop, walked all the way from Worksop (some 18 miles) to make his fortune in the steel city.  His trade in Worksop was as a 'wood sawyer' and when he arrive he was set to work in Black's lumber yard on Pond Street, near his new home.

William made his home in Pond Street, in housing similar to that shown on this page.  Unfortunately (?), this area has been lost to us in one of the many slum clearance programmes and now it is the Transport Interchange and part of Sheffield Hallam University Campus.

Footnote

For those of us who like to bathe in the rosy glow of nostalgia, and long for the days when families looked after their own, read on ........

Following the death of her husband William, Great Great Grandmother Margaret, was apparently shunned by her four remaining children, and ended her days in the Fir Vale Workhouse (Now the Northern General Hospital), some 12 years later.
