Amala Trust
The home today
Since 1997 a new two-storied block and concrete girls' home had been built and this was soon followed by a similar structure for the boys. These buildings house a dormitory, lavatories, classrooms, staff rooms and storerooms. In addition a brick and tiled kitchen, a kindergarten building and medical block were constructed and equipped, and land was purchased. There are now over 100 resident boys and girls, plus 50 or so day children coming for education. The kindergarten is extremely busy with over 150 day children aged 3 to 6. We are a fully recognised school teaching up to 10th standard. After 10th standard, we are currently supporting 45 senior pupils who have continued into sixth form schools for two years. Some are now enrolled on a two or three year university course.
Our staff includes 17 Indian teachers, drivers, cooks and labourers. Within Amala, farm animals such as cows, goats, geese, chickens and dogs wander about. Bananas, coconuts and kitchen crops are grown on site together with colourful shrubs and flowers. Amala is a beautiful oasis in which our children can grow up in a happy, healthy and safe environment.
