The British Sugarcraft Guild was inaugurated officially on 17th March 1981 with the first meeting of the steering committee. Their backgrounds were varied but these enthusiastic cake decorators were united firmly by their love of the art of Sugarcraft.
With a swan and it’s reflection as a logo, a newsletter for new members and it’s motto ‘my craft is my art’ The British Sugarcraft Guild was born.
The aims and objectives of the guild are to: - Promote and stimulate interest in Sugarcraft - Share knowledge - Develop talent - Improve standards
Branches were formed all over the country, and now number around 140. Branch meetings are usually held once a month and a guest demonstrator in invited to share their skills and pass on their knowledge. Some branches are able to encourage children to become involved in the art, they are known as ‘Cygnets’ and they attend classes given by volunteers from the branch.
Branches are divided into 7 regions - Tameside Branch is in Region 2 which covers the North of England
Competitions and exhibitions of members work are organised by individual branches or regions and are held all over the country throughout the year. There was a Region 2 exhibition at Harrogate in 2005 - the next one is June 2007 An International exhibition was held at Stoneleigh Park in July 2004.
For those unable to attend Branch meetings, Individual membership is available and includes a growing number of International members from all countries of the world. Membership of the BSG is open to anyone with an interest in Sugarcraft whatever their skills, from complete novices to those who are professionals in their field.
