Kefalonia is a developing island.....Most flights are of the package variety and depart from Gatwick.....you could find more choice by going to Zakynthos and taking the ferry, but this will lengthen journey times. The island airport is just south of Lassi and the capital town of Argostoli.....it's very small and a bit intimidating ...... most of the local militia attend arrivals!...We Brits must present a terrible threat........A car is essential....you can hire at the airport, look for Alk.Pefanis (Ford Rent a car)....The most difficult part of your journey is through Argostoli....follow the one way system town to the square and take the road marked Geogiou Vergoti....continue until the road becomes 2 way and turn sharp left....you will pass one of the few petrol stations on the right.....the causeway should now be in sight.....drive across (its very narrow)...once on the other side all roads for most of the island begin. Going North take the Sami road....South look for Skala....roads are variable and can be full of potholes(remember your tyres are not covered by your insurance) |
Low on infrastructure....High on beauty!Driving through Lassi is not the best gateway, but past Argostoli (an interesting town) things start to look more like it....As with a lot of islands there is a north/south divide......the natural assets are to the north and the man made variety are to the south....beaches are sandy in the south and a bit pebbly in the north....Beware of any unmade roads...these can turn nasty and your insurance will not cover you for any damage........Not all petrol stations will take credit cards....Driving is slow so allow plenty of time.....Argostoli to Sami takes 45 mins/hour...... |

WHERE TO STAY AND WHEN TO STAYTravelling on Spec is best left to the more adventurous.....it can be done off season.....but flights are limited......Manos has a lot of experience on Kefalonia and has a number of properties in the more picturesque north.....Try not to arrive before mid May or after mid September.......For culture try Fiskardo or Assos and may be Ag Evfimia.
ACCOMMODATIONManos has a useful directory of properties, most to a high standard, Water heating is mostly of the solar type and safety standards are not up to UK regs.....especially around the outside of buildings..eg steps and handrails A FEW TIPSEat out......Greek food is not particularly avant garde......it's good value......local house wines are generally very palatable and of course there is always Retzina.....tipping is appreciated especially if you intend using the same restaurant......Pop over to Ithaki, (ferries from Sami).....Try Antissamos beach east of Sami.....and Myrto beach south of Assos.
