It couldn't be easier, Stansted is an underated airport, it's one of the most relaxed places to start your trip. Only 35 miles north of London, connected by rail from Liverpool Street, (40 mins and only £11 return if you travel with GO) Coach from Victoria or by car using the M25 and M11 (leave at junc 8)TO BOOK WITH GO CLICK HERE....Flying time is approx 1.5 hours. For Venice..... Marco Polo airport is the best choice, its cosy, its friendly with simple transfers and you won't be ripped off. When you arrive at Marco Polo don't rush , walk round to departures and if you are hungry use the self service restaurant (look for the murals)...I know this sounds bizarre but the food is cooked on the spot, great value and friendly service....you may get a chance to chat....find out a few things....get acclimatised!!! Now, those water taxis, they are expensive and by the end of your stay you would have seen enough of them....the trip from the airport is not that interesting, instead buy a ticket at the newspaper stand in arrivals for the local bus....ask for the half hourly N0 5 ACTV to Piazzale Roma...its only L1.500 (about 50p) ACTV buses are orange and pull up just outside arrivals, they are fun and you feel a little more local than tourist... |
PIAZZALE ROMA...say good bye to cars and buses...you have arrivedThis is the square that the greater majority of local and tourists use as their gateway to Venice....It's busy...give yourself a few moments...again don't rush off....two sides of the square are really just access roads..look for the canal...here you will find a very good tourist office, the most useful guide that they provide is a map of the ACTV waterbus system, (it looks a bit like the one used by London Underground)this is the best way to get around Venice and the outer islands. Just below the tourist office by the canal is the ACTV ticket booth, ask for the 24hour ticket (currently L18.000 approx £6)this allows you unlimited access to the whole system......If you are just sightseeing take the no1 or no82 going in the right hand direction as you enter the waterbus pontoon, the rest you can work out for yourself.......... it's a brilliant system and so simple, within 10 minutes you will get the hang of it. |

WHERE TO STAY AND WHEN TO STAYThis very much depends on the time of year.....Venice is not Disney....it's a working city which is fighting for its own survival....this means that the summer is just absolutely a no..no.., it's too hot and just too many people, the best time to visit is anywhere between September and May.....don't make the mistake of thinking that Venice is only about tourism....don't make the mistake of walking through narrow streets in very hot weather....in other words go off season..
ACCOMMODATIONRing Hotel Connect on....0181 381 2233 or if you really want to have a go youself ring Venice 711038 for a very reasonable deal.... Ask for room 5...double room at L100.000 a night, en suite and private terrace. English speaking, the Albergo Casa Peron is only minutes from Piazzale Roma, but in the heart of Venice A FEW TIPSAs with anywhere, the closer the main attractions the dearer the food and drink (£5 for a cup of coffee in S.Marco), look for smaller restaurants, a typical 3 course meal should cost no more L25.000. A must as far as sightseeing is the island of Burano, take a No 12 from F.te Nove you won't regret it, but forget Murano..... Well there you are.....a snapshot of Venice....A fantastic place for a short break.......If you want to know more get in touch with Andrew & Di CLICK HERE all items copyright..........all items are the authors own views.
