  • Researching Family History for the names -

JONES

I originally set out to discover what had happened to the 17 siblings belonging to my paternal grandfather's generation, who lived close by and were mainly involved in the local mining industry. I have now achieved these results and much more!

URQUHART

My mother was from the Highlands, and the very first spark of research came about when we tried to establish the exact burial site in Rosskeen cemetery for her father who had died when she was still a child. I never did discover with sufficent certainty to be allowed to erect a headstone which was what we had hoped to do. But what a journey of discovery that started!

As well as the long hard slog associated with family research, I've had some amazingly good results by applying some 'lateral thinking'.

For instance, possessing a scrap of paper relating to the family ownership of a cemetery plot in Dailly, Ayrshire, I did a web search and finding a likely newspaper in the locality mentioned - Keewatin in Canada, I enquired of them via the internet if there was knowledge of an Andrew Jones (one of those 17) ever being in the locality. There most certainly was - his great-grandaughter, Barb Malmo, was actually employed by the paper. Talk about luck! Before I knew it, I was in contact with some teriffic people with fascinating tales to tell of family links, we've found a whole branch to add to the tree thanks to Bob Stewart at the Kenora Miner & News and made some firm friends too. Hopefully it won't be too long before we manage to meet them all.

I would suggest that anyone who follows this kind of route should be careful what they say in their e-mails - I found our story featured in an article by Ruth Bowiec with photographs of Barb and her dad - another Andrew Jones (my second cousin) on the front page of the Miner & News!! It's all exciting stuff!!

There were also connections discovered in Australia where Suzanne and her mother Muriel have been most helpful. In America too; and also much valuable information from lots of relatives much closer to home.

I share with Sue -and many others - the hope that Dalquharran, Robert Adam's "other masterpeice"  can one day be restored or at least conserved in respect of  it's generally overlooked historical importance.

We're trying to check out the interest levels just now, so if you've heard of it or want to know more about it, please e-mail me: andra.jones@virgin.net

Hopefully, there will be a new page growing from this interest in the not-too-distant future - your information could help tremendously!

In the meantime, if you would like to find out a bit more about Dalquharran, have a look at this site, a lot of work has gone into it:  http://home.clara.net/stuartg/intro.html
