Frank Cairns

Frank Cairns began playing guitar in his mid-teens playing the usual schoolboy rock and folk one associates with the 1970’s when jazz was from another planet. Realising that he better learn to play ‘properly’ he took classical lessons from the great Glasgow (via Yorkshire) teacher Ron Moore who as well as beating those self taught bad habits out, was influential in turning Frank in a jazz direction.

There followed years playing a broad range of musics from free form, straight ahead jazz and experimental styles including the minimalist composer Rhys Chatham’s ‘100 Guitars’ project at 1984 Glasgow Mayfest arts festival. During this time he was a founder member and evangelical supporter of the now defunct Glasgow Guitar Club.

Nowadays Frank concentrates on jazz and outside Liquid Jazz, currently plays with Jazzco, Byres Road Big Band and ad hoc sessions around Glasgow.

Andy Mulligan

Andy Mulligan first picked up a tenor sax at secondary school in the winter of 1991 where he was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to have not only saxophone lessons but also play in the schools many bands. During this time, he also dabbled with the clarinet, flute and piano (with varying degrees of success) although the saxophone has always remained his first love.

Despite studying both classical and jazz in the early years, he increasingly developed a love of jazz which has continued to this day. This has led to playing saxophone in a variety of jazz groups over the years which have included The Strathclyde Arts Centre Big Band and Workshop (later to become The Tramway Arts Centre Big Band and Workshop), The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, Disband, Straight No Chicken, The Glasgow University Big Band, The Hume Saxophone Quartet and most recently acting as Musical Director for Swing Sensation at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Iain (Mac) McIntyre

Iain McIntyre has been playing electric bass for many years (he won’t admit how many) and is experienced in most styles and genres of music.

As well as with Liquid Jazz, he currently plays with the Derek Clark Quartet and rock band Asylum.  In recent years he has played with several other bands, including F-Demented, Jazzco, the Sammy Dow’s Big Band and Allon Beauvoisin Trio.

Over the years he has kept his bass playing fresh by taking occasional lessons from local pro’s Andy Mitchell, Ross Hamilton and Andy Sharkey.

Billy McGrory

Billy McGrory has played drums for more years than he cares to remember. Down through the ages he has played various styles and genres including traditional celtic and celtic fusion, country and festering, rock, pop etc. He has also played with Derek Clark, and Sammy Dow's Big Band. In the past,he played full time with Dead Skunk Band, and is currently on a world tour of his bedroom, occasionally venturing out to play with Liquid Jazz and Thunder Road and anyone else mad enough to give him a call. On a more serious note, he is a drum tutor at the MacMillan school of music.
