George Pain/Payne - Emigration to Australia 1852

George PAIN was born in Sussex in 1812 the son of Edward and Sophie PAIN who moved from Steyning, Sussex to Tilmanstone sometime between 1812 and 1816. Edward PAIN was an agricultural labourer and died in 1850, age 63, in the Eastry Union Workhouse and was buried at Northbourne. Sophie (née WHITE) his wife died in 1876, age 85, also in the Eastry Union Workhouse and was also buried at Northbourne.

Their children were:

Leonard and Peter who are registered with the surname spelling of PAYNE.

George married Jane WOOD (born 1822 Eastry, father John WOOD mother Jane LORDEN) at Northbourne in 1841. Five children were born in Northbourne, Charles, Jane, John, George and Emma. Their daughter Jane died at Northbourne in 1843.

The family emigrated to Australia  leaving Gravesend in 1852 aboard the 'Anne Milne' and arrived in Portland, Victoria in 1853. A son Thomas was born aboard during the trip to Australia and four more children were born in Australia, Julia, Susan, William and Edward. The spelling PAYNE was also used on the 'Anne Milne' passenger list and PAYNE has been used by the family descendants in Australia.
