Edward Hasted 1799
The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent Vol IV.
Introduction
I have reproduced the text for Northbourne from Edward Hasted's 1st folio edition of The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent Vol. IV. 1799. I have made it easier to read by not using the 'long s' and I have not retained his extensive use of italic. I have also changed some 'y' to 'i' for example on p185 'Wryght' becomes 'Wright'.
BE AWARE there are some variations in spelling, even on the same page, for example on p184 'Lichfield' and 'Lichfeld' are used. Although they may appear to be my typos, they are not.
Where facts are known to be wrong or further explanation is needed my own comments have been added in brackets, for example on Ham page 183:
Nymphæ alba [white water lily]
Or about Northbourne Court on p. 146:
Sir Richard Sandys, knt. became possessed of it, and resided here. He married Mary, daughter of Sir Henry Heyman, of Selling, bart. and was killed by his fowling-piece in passing a hedge in 1663. [the accident actually occurred in 1669, see parish burial register]
Note
that the earlier four-volume folio edition of the History contains some material which Hasted trimmed from the 1800 2nd edition (relevant volumes for the Northbourne parish being IX and X). The 2nd edition was reprinted by E P Publishing Ltd Yorkshire in 1972.
More pages will be added when available.
