Kelly's Directory 1878
NORTHBOURNE, so named from its situation at the source of a
small brook running to Sandwich, is a parish in the Eastern division of
the county, Cornilo hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, union of Eastry, Deal
county court and police district, Sandwich rural deanery, diocese and arch
deaconry of Canterbury, 3 miles south-west from Deal and 4 south of Sandwich.
The church of St. Augustine, which is built of flint, is a large cruciform
edifice, consisting of a chancel, nave and transept, having a square tower
in the middle containing 5 bells: the church is nearly covered with ivy:
over a vault in the south transept is a marble monument to Sir Edwin Sandys
and his family, who are buried here; upon it are recumbent effigies of a
knight in armour and his lady; above the pediment and around it are several
shields, with armorial bearings of the family; there is also a costly reredos
and tessellated pavement in the east end, and a beautiful stained window,
subject, "The Crucifixion" which was given to the church by Sarah, widow
of Charles Hannam, esq. of Northbourne Court, in memory of her husband: there
are also two stained windows in the north transept, in memory of H.J. Hutchinson
and the Rev. Thos. Hutchinson: the latter 17 years rector of this parish.
The register dates from the year 1586. The living is a rectory, yearly value
£300, with residence in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and
held by the Rev. Thos. Wood M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. The Manor
of Northbourne was given in 618, by Eadbald, King of Kent, to the monastery
of St. Augustine at Canterbury; it subsequently came into the hands of the
Crown, but is now the property of Sir Walter Charles James, bart. of Betteshanger.
The principal landowners are Sir Walter Charles James, bart. Frederick Morrice
esq. Henry Hannam esq. and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The soil is
