All the church memorials mentioned above are inside the the relevant church, except the Ham memorial which was removed to St Mary's church, Betteshanger (the Ham church of St George the Martyr is now a private house). Betteshanger church now serves as a chapel for Northbourne Park School.

On the 1st November 1914, he went to France, and in the following January was wounded. He spent 13 months in hospital, and returned to the front in March 1916. by a German shell on 8th Feb. 1916, age 32. In September 1915 he enlisted with The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) and afterwards transfered to the Royal Garrison Artillery. He is buried in a cemetery in the village of Suzanne in the Somme region. Memorials: Northbourne, and the Victoria Memorial Hospital in Deal, and also mentioned on two gravestones in the Northbourne churchyard. |

He had only been in the trenches one day when he was reported missing. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme in France. Unfortunately the wound was accompanied by gas injuries, and he passed away. He is buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Boulogne, France. Rifles, 6th November 1918. He joined the Buffs (East Kent Regiment) Special Reserve in 1912, aged 17½. Later transferred to the Kings Royal Rifles, which went to India in 1913. At the start of the war in 1914 he saw 11 months active service in France. After two years and seven months in Salonika he returned to France. Memorial: Ham |
