  • 1980-82 - music foundation course, Bromsgrove, Worcs. Studied piano with Harold Taylor, composition with Ian Spooner, and clarinet with Gillian Thorn (CBSO).
  • 1982-85 - BA (Hons) with first class honours at Newcastle Polytechnic. Studied clarinet with Graham Evans (Northern Sinfonia) and composition with Dr Steve Ingham (Newcastle University).
  • 1985-86 - British Academy scholarship awarded for research into graphical music notation at Newcastle University
  • 1991-93 - M.Mus (Lond.) Masters degree in music composition at Goldsmith’s College London. Studied composition with professor Peter Dickinson. Also studied with Edward Gregson and David Wright
