PHILIPS 206A Radio

This radio was well ahead of it's time. Unusual features for the time were: An extremely compact chassis, Permanent magnet speaker and an Inductor free power supply using high value smoothing capacitors.

There were two versions made. The one made before the invasion of Holland used side contact valves and the one made after the invasion of Holland used Octal valves. I got my set for £20 from a shop in Great Leighs. The most common fault is an open circuit output transformer.

The worst example I ever worked on was one that belonged to a friend of mine. It needed a new o/p transformer, but the worst problem was an open circuit MW oscillator coil. The MW and LW oscillator coils are attatched together, so I had to modify the set to use a single coil for MW and LW. I obtained the oscillator coil from a 1950's HMV radiogram. The set also had broken IF cores which had to be carefully drilled out. After the set was restored the tracking was fairly good on MW, but not so good on LW, still the owner was very delighted.
