BUSH T36 Television

    BUSH T36 Television (1954)

The BUSH T36 was the first set in my family, though this example is not the actual one. My Grandad had bought the set new in 1954 and when it was later replaced with a rental set he gave it to my parents. My parents then kept the set until just before I was born in 1974.

The T36 although not valuable, turned out to be extremley rare. When I decided that I wanted one I found that I had to build it out of bits. I obtained a much more common version of the console (which has doors), which had a scruffy cabinet, and restored it to working order by rebuilding all the old wax capcitors.

Then I was very fortunate to come across an original cabinet. I had to machine many new wooden parts for the tube supports and make new metal brackets for the chassis.

One of the biggest jobs was making a new control panel from scratch. I made this using 6mm Tufnol. I did not have much to go on except what people could remember about the set. I did know what the control knobs were like though, as my Dad later used them as knobs on some of our furniture.

After this I needed the correct speaker for the set. It turned out that my Dad had saved the speaker from the original set and I found it in the loft. So you could say in a sense that this is our original set!
