Still Seeking!

Have you lost an Ancestor? ~Try Tree Tops!

EDITH MATTHEWS ~ Born 1877 Rugby Warwickshire, Daughter of John and Elizabeth MATTHEWS, nee SPENCER.

The family resided in Warwickshire until between 1881 and 1891.  The census for Merrow, Guildford Surrey in 1891 shows John has remarried and is living with his second wife Maria, daughter Edith and son John. Another daughter Maryanne is a domestic living with the FACEY family nearby.

Family information indicates that Edith was a “nurse” and various photographs show that she probably married and raised at least three children, of whom nothing is known.

Searches of the Red Cross Documents suggest that Edith was probably a VAD during the Boer War (1899-1902).

FREDERICK GOUCHER ~ Of Frederick Goucher virtually nothing of his life in England is known. He was sent as a Home Child to Canada in 1916, aged 16 years on board the Sicilian, which sailed from Liverpool and arrived in Quebec, Canada.

HENRY GOUCHER ~ Henry Goucher was transported in 1811 from London aboard the Guildford, which arrived in NSW Australia in 1812.  Henry can be traced in Australia until 1820.

1813 Oct 4th On list of prisoners to be sent to Newcastle aboard the Estramina
1814 Jan 8th On list of prisoners to be dispatched to Newcastle aboard the Estramina
1814 Apr 4th & 5th  On lists of convicts to be sent to the Derwent aboard the Windham
1820 Apr 26th  On list of prisoners transported to Newcastle aboard the Elizabeth Henrietta

After 1820, nothing further is found. Searches of the Marriage and Death records in Australia have proved fruitless.
