We know nothing about the Italian Baldo apart from his name in the context of the creation of this Novus Aesopus. The work is probably of the thirteenth century – certainly not earlier.
The text given here is from Alfons Hilka, Beiträge zur lateinischen Erzählungsliteratur des Mittelalters, Abhandlungen der Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen, Philologisch-Historische Klasse, Neue Folge XXI/3, Berlin, Weidmannsche Buchhandlung, 1928, pp. 21-58.
Hilka makes use of two manuscripts for his edition, one in Vienna and another in Heiligenkreuz. He supplies a critical apparatus and discussion which is not reproduced here. Note that Hilka fails to number a line between 1090 and 1095.
