BOURGAS AND SOUTH EAST BULGARIA
8-DAY WINE TOUR This tour visits some of Bulgaria's finest red wine producers, including the wineries at Oriachovitsa, Assenovgrad, Stambolovo and Iambol. From the coast you travel inland to Plovdiv with its picturesque Old Town and Roman Amphitheatre, visit beautiful Bachkovo Monastery and explore the remote southeast of the country, before returning to the coast at Nessebar, a small peninsula with numerous Byzantine churches. Along the way there will be dramatic mountain scenery, spectacular views and plenty of opportunities to sample Bulgaria's inviting food and wine. ItinerarySunday - Travel by charter flight from various UK airports to Burgas. Spend your first night in Nessebar, a photogenic and historic town included in UNESCO's World Heritage List. This tiny peninsula has a wealth of fascinating Byzantine churches. Monday - Drive inland to visit the picturesque wine cellar at Oriachovitsa and enjoy a winetasting with snacks. Drive on via Stara Zagora to Plovdiv. After checking in at your hotel, there will be time for a stroll before dinner in the Old Town. (Nessebar-Oriachovitsa 160 kms. Oriachovitsa-Plovdiv 110 kms.) Tuesday - Begin the day with some sightseeing in Plovdiv: the Roman Amphitheatre, the 19th Century National Revival houses and the Ethnographic Museum. Then drive out to the village of Bachkovo for lunch, and a visit to the historic monastery, Bulgarias second largest. There are fascinating internal and external frescoes. Continue on to Assenova Fortress from where there are panoramic views of the Thracian plain and the Rhodope Mountains. By late afternoon you arrive at Assenovgrad winery for a guided tour and a wine tasting during which you will hear the story of how Mavrud wine got its name. Return to Plovdiv for a late dinner in the courtyard restaurant of Hotel Trimontium. (Plovdiv-Bachkovo 30 kms. Bachkovo-Assenovgrad 10 kms. Assenovgrad-Plovdiv 20 kms.) Wednesday - Today you travel via Haskovo to the remote southeast corner of Bulgaria to visit Stambolovo winery, famous for its delicious Merlot wines. Enjoy a tasting with lunch beside the lake. Drive north then to Sliven for an overnight stay. (Plovdiv-Stambolovo 95 kms. Stambolovo-Sliven 135 kms.) Thursday - Begin the day with some sightseeing in Sliven, and then experience a wine tasting in a very unusual setting! Lunch at Chateau Alpia. Drive to Iambol, and have some leisure time in the centre until your early evening visit to Iambol winery, where you will have a guided tour and winetasting with snacks. Return to the hotel for a light supper. (Sliven-Iambol 25 kms.) Friday - Return drive to the coast at Nessebar. Lunch and sightseeing, followed by some free time to explore on your own or go to the beach. Dinner with entertainment at Sunny Beach. (Iambol-Nessebar 115 kms.) Saturday Morning visit to St. Georges Monastery at Pomorie, which, according to legend, has a miraculous healing spring. Next you visit the winerys cellar for a tasting with snacks. In the afternoon there will be some free time before your Farewell Dinner in a private room in one of Nessebars restaurants. (Nessebar-Pomorie 25 kms.)
