Bulgaria

Bulgaria is situated on the Balkan Peninsula occupying about 43,000 sq. miles, an area smaller than England, with a population of under 9 million. Its borders are the Danube and Rumania in the north, the Black Sea in the east, Macedonia and Yugoslavia in the west and Greece and Turkey in the south. Its capital is Sofia.

The landscape is a real mosaic of cool valleys, wooded hills, fertile plains, numerous rivers and lakes and five main groups of mountain ranges: the Balkans, Sreda Gora, Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopes, taking up about a third of the territory.

Bulgaria provides wonderful holiday facilities both inland and on the sea coast at all seasons. The region has had a long and turbulent history since the first cultured tribes of Thracian came to live there. The first Bulgarian state was formed in 681 A.D. and after 500 years of Ottoman rule, the modern Bulgaria state came into formal being with the Organic Law of 28th April 1878. Since 1947 outstanding developments in industry and agriculture have been taking place together with great advances in education and culture. The Bulgarians today are justly proud of their heritage. They are preserving what is best in their culture and enriching it further.

British-Bulgarian trade and cultural relations are growing, but there is still a great deal to be done.

If you have been to Bulgaria perhaps for a holiday, sport or business, or even if you are just interested, and you wish to have (or keep) links with this beautiful and fascinating country, please join the British-Bulgarian Friendship Society today.
