Art House

About the Art House

The Art House was set up by disabled and non-disabled artists who want to work together and improve access to opportunities for artists.

Disabled artists are vastly under-represented in the arts. Many visual artists have difficulties accessing work and studio spaces, and these problems are more acute for disabled artists. Though disabled people represent 14% of the population an Arts Council of England report found only 0.6% of practising artists were disabled.

The Art House was set up to create opportunities for disabled and non-disabled artists nationally to make work in an integrated environment and ensure equal access to opportunities in the visual arts.

We aim to:

  • Promote artists through exhibitions, workshops and commissions, and provide any necessary support.

  •  Provide information, advice and training to artists to improve skills which support their professional practice.

  • Campaign for better access for disabled artists and represent their views to different organisations.

Establish a centre of national importance with accessible studio spaces, adaptable equipment and technical support where disabled and non-disabled artists can work together.

We are an inclusive organisation and welcome all artists and all visual art forms and approaches to art. We aim to be a facilitator, enabling artists to take up opportunities or gain experience which will strengthen their practice in the visual arts.

The Art House is a membership organisation open to visual artists and makers, with a Supporters Scheme for others.
