Art Activities in the Art House

Artistic Policy

The Art House is an integrated organisation of artists, established by and for practising visual artists working in the full range of visual arts disciplines.

The Art House is committed to:

  1. Equal involvement, access, opportunity and mutual support of artists, promoting positive role models of artists with disabilities.

  2. Providing opportunities for artists to make quality work, create innovative projects, exhibit and carry out commissions, residencies and workshops paid at rates in line with regional arts boards' and arts councils' recommendations and at venues which are accessible.

  3. Providing opportunities for technicians and assistants to support and work alongside experienced artists.

  4. Creating exhibitions on a national basis.

  5. Establishing and encouraging accessible studio facilities and exhibition venues.

Exhibitions Policy

The Art House will initiate exhibitions to promote members work and seek exhibition opportunities from other venues and organisations.

The Art House will encourage diversity in exhibitions which leads to the inclusion of a range of artists in relation to disability, cultural background, geographical basis, art form, artistic approach, curatorial concept etc. in order to ensure that there are opportunities over time for as wide a range of members as possible.

  1. Exhibitions will take place in a range of accessible venues around the country.

  2. There will be different selection panels for each exhibition.

  3. Work will generally be selected by slide and photographs unless an exhibition has been planned with a specific budget for the transport of work for selection.

  4. The Art House will not differentiate between disabled and non-disabled artists. Nor will the Art House adopt a segregational approach. However, individual artists may choose to offer information about their identity in artists statements.

  5. The Art House supports the principle of Exhibition Payment Right for artists. In the long term it aims to budget for this in all exhibition proposals. However it will pass on all opportunities to members whether EPR is available or not and in the short term will endeavour to cover transport costs even if EPR is not possible.

  6. The Art House will encourage critical debate and educational activities in relation to exhibitions to engage with audiences.

  7. The Art House will initiate exhibitions which promote and support new work.

  8. The Art House will encourage collaboration with independent curators and engage with contemporary practice.

  9. The Art House will take commission on work sold at a fixed percentage.

  10. The Art House may advertise opportunities locally, regionally or nationally as appropriate.

Quality

The Art House wishes to promote good practice for artists and ensure artistic activities are carried out professionally. Evaluation and monitoring takes place for all projects relating both to artistic and organisational aspects.
