Art House

How the Art House works

The Art House is a national organisation:

Members = Artists + Supporters are the basis of the organisation. They become involved in planning and projects through the: Yorkshire Artists Group North West Artists Group Future Regional Groups who feed backviews and ideas to the:Board of Management= Artists & Board of Directorswho delegate management on a daily basis to: Staff who carry out the work and have contact with members on a day to day basis with support from volunteers.

Members

There are nearly 200 members - disabled and non-disabled artists and supporters who receive a range of services from the Art House.

Artists Meetings

Artists meetings are responsible for developing the artistic programme and all members can contribute to this. Members who do not attend meetings can send comments via post, fax, email and phone. The meetings are an opportunity for artists to network and discuss their creative practice. Monthly artists meetings are currently held in Halifax and Manchester, though we plan to set up more regional groups. All members can receive the minutes of the meetings on request.

Board of Management

The Art House has a board of management which determines its strategy. Five are artist representatives who put forward the views of the membership and the perspective of artists and disabled people. The other five have backgrounds in finance, business, health, the arts, law and education. This mixture of people ensures the Art House is an artist centred organisation with a sound structure.

The Art House is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee, because of this four of the board members act as directors of the company.

Artist Representatives

Artists representatives attend artists meetings and board meetings. Any member can be nominated as a representative on the board before the Annual General Meeting. Two artists stand down each year to make way for new people, but they can be re-elected if no one wishes to take their place.

Administration

The Art House has a full time manager who gives support to members, runs projects and training and is responsible for fund-raising and publicity. We are seeking funding for more posts in order to expand our activities and increase our services to members. The administration is based in sponsored office space at Dean Clough, Halifax, where we have also held exhibitions and a conference.

Volunteers

We have support from many members on a voluntary basis in meetings, on projects and with administration. We aim to set up more voluntary placements for artists who wish to gain experience to improve their skills. Please see the sheet Working for the Art House: Volunteers.

Freelancers

Artists and technicians are employed on a freelance basis for different projects. Please see the sheet Working for the Art House: Freelancers.

The organisation has separate policies on Membership, Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety, Employment and Complaints. Please refer to the appropriate information sheets.
