Fitting the kit to your STE computer:
Read this through, complete this slowly and don't rush and you will have no problems. :o)

The chips and the innards of your Atari computer are static sensitive. Open the packet only when you are ready to work.

Do this upgrade where you are safe from static, ie: next to a radiator or similar metal item which is earthed.

Fitting 4Mb upgrade:

Turn off and remove all cables from the ST. Remove the 7 case screws, 3 front; 4 back, they are a different size so keep them seperate. Leave the 3 that hold the disk drive in place.

Remove lid, lift lefthand side first, and the right side comes off by jiggling the area around the floppy drive.

Take screws out of the L shaped box. There maybe some twisty metal hook things which need be untwisted with pliers to get the metal box free

TAKE CARE!!
The circuit board of the computer is static sensitive.
Work near a radiator or other earthed metal object. Touch this metal object regulary
.

Also, the STs internal power supply contains 110/240 volts so you should not dismantle the computer whilst its on and it should be unplugged and left half an hour before you start work.

Handy hint!! have a clean new bristle paint brush handy (NOT a nylon one, which could create static!)
These are great for remove dust from the inside of the computer and between the keys!

Take off the metal box. You will see the power supply and the SIMM sockets.

On a unmodified 520STE there are two 256k simm memory sticks. On a 1040STE there are four.

These need to be removed carefully as the latches on the sockets break very easily.

The come out at angle and need to removed in the right order.

*Very* very gently use a flat screwdriver to work the plastic latches sideways so the simms will pop forward. You can now remove them.

Fit the new four 1Mb simms they only fit one direction, you will need to fit them in at a slight angle, and then push them so the are straight and the latches will click to hold them in. They need to be in evenly so all 30 pins fit nicely in their socket.

Once all four simms are in ok. You can refit the metal box and reassemble the rest of the computer.

Run the software to test and you now have 4MB!!

You can now discard your old 256k simms.

If you want to give the top case shell a clean after you have finished the upgrade and reassemble the computer, warm soapy water and nail brush gets rid of all the dirt between the vents! You could give the keyboard a clean, be careful removing the keys so you dont snap the key shafts.
