This magazine is for all fans of the western genre, but specifically geared for devotees of the Black Horse Western imprint. Contributors and the editorial team are Black Horse Western writers, but we are not the publishers of the Black Horse Western series.

What are Black Horse Westerns?

The Black Horse imprint started in 1986 and provides small paper board (hardbacks without a dust jacket) novels for western fans. The books are short (2-3 hours reading time), are all action-packed western yarns, and are written mainly by modern writers, although the occassional classic title does appear.

Who publishes the Black Horse Western series?

Robert Hale Ltd, a London publisher, whose market for fiction is largely the British lending libraries.

Are they available in paperback?

Ulverscoft reissue many Black Horse Westerns, typically a year after publication, as Linford Western paperbacks. Although published in Large Print, they can be enjoyed by all in that format.

Can I buy a Black Horse Western in a bookshop?

Some of the larger British bookshops do provide them, but the easiest method of purchasing is through Amazon.co.uk, who will ship to anywhere in the world.

How do I get hold of a BHW?

You can buy new BHWs at Amazon.co.uk and you can bid for secondhand BHWs at ebay.co.uk, but by far the cheapest way to read these books is by supporting your local library. Ask your librarian to order them through the inter-library loans system. Just quote title, author and publisher (Robert Hale, London).

Can I contribute to the Black Horse Express?

Sure. We welcome original articles that deal with aspects of western fiction, history, biography, writing, etc, although preference will be given to articles that deal exclusively with or have a slant towards Black Horse Westerns.
