Dunster

Dunster is an extremely picturesque village with a great deal of history attached to it, some of the attractions include the Castle, Water Mill, the Priory Church, the village gardens and the Yarn Market.  The village has many shops selling traditional crafts, clothing and gifts. There are also a wide range of restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes.  Dunster is also the gateway to the Exmoor National Park which provides an array of entertainment, including unlimited walking and photographic opportunities. Exmoor is a paradise for anyone who loves outdoor pursuits, horse riding, fishing and the great outdoors. Safaris and steam boat trips are often available to explore this fascinating area.

The Castle

The castle is Norman in origin and has changed considerably over the past eight hundred years. There is an eleventh century tower and a Tudor front. The gateway leading up to the terrace has been in use for 650 years. The castle was formerly owned by the medieval family of de Mohun and for the past five hundred years by the Luttrells. It is now preserved for the nation by the National Trust.

The Yarn Market

The Yarn Market, built in 1609 is one of the main features of the High Street. Here local cloth or "Dunsters" were sold, giving the village its name.

Plus...

The Priory Church houses a unique rood screen and enchanting carillon tunes ring out from the church bells. The delightful church gardens lead into the pretty and peaceful walled garden, now owned by the villagers of Dunster. There is also a delightful packhorse bridge, Gallox Bridge, crossing the river Avill, a Deer Park and Dovecote.

Dunster Watermill

Dunster Water Mill dates from the 18th century but records in the Doomsday Book indicate a water mill on this site from 1086. The present mill was in use until 1962 and comparatively recently restored in 1979.
The Mill has interesting features both out and inside. You will enjoy the working buildings and find the crude, but functional, mechanics quite fascinating. The mill also houses a museum of old agricultural machinery.
This Mill is run and maintained by private funding - NT members have to pay.
