HOME	With Balintraid House only 25miles north of Inverness and 38miles north of Loch Ness, it is the ideal place to stay after -or before- a spot of Nessie hunting or sampling the delights of the charming Highland capital.     But the immediate surroundings make for rewarding visits, too. Only a short drive from the house is Nigg pier where in the summer a lovely little two-car ferry takes you across to Cromarty, following in the footsteps of King James IV.     Shandwick, Hilton and Balintore beach are well worth a look at, especially if you like the Picts and their exquisite standing stones, numerous in the area, culminating in the Tarbat Ness Discovery Centre museum at Portmahomack, which is a village with breathtaking scenery and one of the few on the east coast that have views to the west (and sunsets, for all fans of the Little Prince).     Tain and Dornoch with their splendid buildings and wonderful scenery, beach and golf, are 10 - 20mins drive to the north. Spectacular wildlife, seals, herons, ducks, curlews, oystercatchers, and lots of other seabirds can be seen just a little bit further at Loch Fleet.
