Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000

If you buy goods or services through

the internet
digital television
mail order
catalogue shopping
phone
fax

- you are protected (to a degree) by the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000

The key features are:

you must receive clear information including
- details of the goods or services offered
- delivery arrangements and payment
- supplier's details and
- your cancellation right
in writing,  before you buy

You should also have a cooling-off period of seven working days

Excluded transactions

Disposals of interests in land, construction contracts, contracts made by vending machines, auctions and those made with a telecoms operator using a public pay-phone. Most importantly, the Regulations do not apply to any contract relating to financial services.

Key provisions of the Regulations also exclude contracts for the supply of food, drink or other groceries; contracts for the provision of transport, accommodation, catering or leisure services; and contracts under which services are supplied on only one occasion.
