The Barbon Inn Trail Ride

Day One

On leaving Low Haygarth we ford the river and follow a bridleway along the fell side down the beautiful Cautley valley, towards the small town of Sedbergh. At times the river runs in a deep gill to the side of our track. We skirt Sedbergh via a network of small lanes to the hamlet of Millthrop, where we cross the Dent road to Abbotholm and lunch.

We then climb a steep track up Holme Fell, which offers wonderful panoramic views of the area.
We descend into the Lune Valley, where we follow the River Lune for a short stretch, before crossing farmland to Middleton Hall Farm.

We then ride some lovely lanes to the village of Barbon, where we spend the night at the Barbon Inn, a 17th Century coaching Inn, renowned for its good food.

Day Two

We depart from Barbon, going behind its Church into the parkland of Barbon Manor, where we take a bridleway through beautiful woodland before emerging into Barbondale itself, a lovely dale with steep sided fells on both sides. At the top of the dale is the hamlet of Gawthrop and Combe Scar, known to be a nesting site of the rare Peregrine Falcon.

There are wonderful views of Dentdale before us, a dale noted for its picturesque beauty. We follow a gated lane by the River Dee until we cross it and climb the fell behind Gate Manor, onto the old golf course.

This offers us some lovely views of Sedbergh and the Howgill Fells. We descend via Hollins Lane, to skirt the town and follow our original bridleway up to Cautley valley that will lead us back to Low Haygarth.
