Who we are:
Craven & Pendle Geological Society is an amateur geological society.  The name was derived from the majestic Pendle Hill and the rolling landscape of the Craven Lowlands.  Membership is open to all and currently stands at £6.00 per year for adults and £8.00 for family membership and £3.00 for students.

Our current programme for 2004 / 2005

Background
Our local geology is dominated by rocks belonging to the Carboniferous Period (362.5 million years ago).  Part of our local heritage is derived from the legacy of the past i.e. coal mining and limestone quarrying (for roadstone and in the making of cement).  Both have contributed greatly to the prosperity of our region.  Our search for knowledge extends beyond the Carboniferous Period.  Indoor meetings frequently involve presentations on a variety of topics such as Volcanic Iceland, Dinosaur Tracking on the Jurassic Yorkshire coast, and even Planetary geology.  Outdoor meetings often include visits to the Lake District and the Derbyshire Peak District.

Outdoor Meetings
Outdoor field excursions are held from April to September, the majority of which are organized by members of the society. Our focus is local geology. CPGS is geographically on the doorstep of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland - both areas of outstanding natural beauty and home to spectacular geological localities.

Indoor Meetings
Indoor meetings are held monthly from October to March in a ground floor Conference Room at Barden High School in Burnley beginning at 7.30pm. Cars can be parked directly outside the meeting room in a floodlit area. Invited speakers have proved to be popular, informative and entertaining. Meetings end with informal discussion and refreshments.
